INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTRIBUTORS
FGN #47 will be published in the summer of 2000. Reviewing of manuscripts commences in January of the publication year so contributions should be made between 1st January and the submission deadline (see INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTRIBUTORS below). The Newsletter is a suitable place for short research notes, methods notes, linkage data, information concerning new mutants, announcements of meetings, or of positions available et cetera. It is a policy not to accept an abstract or shorter version of a full-length paper which will be published soon in a regular journal. However, a more extensive description of techniques or mutants used in a regular paper would be appropriate for FGN. We particularly encourage you to use FGN to describe new techniques or methods. All manuscripts are reviewed but will not be returned to authors for minor editorial changes. Please make every effort to have your manuscript conform to the format used in FGN. The details of formats for "Mini Reviews", "One-Liners" and "Brief Notes" are as follows: "Mini Reviews" is a section in which one or two brief reviews of an area of research will be published. Potential contributors are encouraged to communicate an outline of their review before writing the manuscript. "One-Liners" is a section in which helpful hints, et cetera, can be communicated. Please communicate one or two sentence pieces of useful information at any time during the year. "Brief Notes" is a section in which a brief account of research observations can be made; typically only very preliminary research will have been done.
Manuscripts should follow the standard format for the Newsletter: consult papers in this edition of the Newsletter or the Editor if you are not sure of the format. Regular papers should also include a brief ABSTRACT (about 4 or 5 lines) which contains the following: 1) A statement of the question/hypothesis; 2)The experimental approach and most significant results; and 3) The conclusions.
Manuscripts should be double spaced. Three copies of the manuscript should be submitted. DO NOT submit manuscripts by Fax. If you wish to submit your manuscript via e-mail, you should first contact the Editor by e-mail (address below).
Authors should include their Fax number and e-mail address with their submission.
Accepted and revised manuscripts may be submitted on computer diskette or e-mail for printing. Diskettes are preferred, as format is better preserved. DO NOT send diskettes until an article has been accepted for publication. Please indicate the software (including version number) used to prepare the disk.
Make tables and figures as compact as possible. Both should be submitted in final form suitable for publication. Please take steps to prevent them being bent in the mail. Figures should be avoided where words are adequate. We cannot reproduce color figures.
References should be used sparingly. When needed, they should be cited within the text as shown in the following examples (Note: pagination is inclusive.):

Deadline for receipt of contributions is on or before 1 March 2000. Reviewing of manuscripts begins in January.

The FGSC on the Internet
The FGSC web-site has its own domain. You can find the FGSC site at www.fgsc.net
The FGSC site was selected as a 'hot pick' by Science Magazine and has been featured at a number of other on-line portals including HMS Beagle.
The new FGSC domain includes extensive on-line searching capabilities and all the information that was available at the old address.
Resources available include a searchable bibliography, methods, recipes and hints for working with Neurospora, Aspergillus and other fungi and an FGSC deposit sheet. The Web site contains the most up-to-date FGSC strain listings and mailing list.
FGSC On-line Bulletin board
The FGSC has sponsored an on-line bulletin board where visitors may post announcements, job offerings, questions or other information relevant to Fungal Genetics. The FGSC will maintain editorial control over this forum. Postings remain on-line for four weeks. Find the FGSC bulletin board at the FGSC web-site.

Neurospora RFLP maps
Drs. Mary Anne Nelson and Donald Natvig have assumed responsibility for data derived from RFLP mapping efforts[see Fungal Genet. Newsl. 45: 44-54 (1998) for most recent map]. Please submit any new results to them (manelson@unm.edu or dnatvig@unm.edu). Numbers may be assigned to submissions to preserve confidentiality.
