Gene symbols

Standard gene locus symbols for A. nidulans have the form abcA. Genes of related function can be designated by an alphabetical series e.g. argA, argB, argC. Individual mutants are designated by numbers: abcA1, abcA2, etc. Special properties of mutants such as dominance or homology may be indicated by an optional superscript: abcA6d; this is not part of the essential symbol and may be omitted without changing the identity of the allele referred to.

Note that in some cases the same symbol has been used for more than one gene.
