cultural_requirements: Unable to use acetate as a carbon source. For a diagram of the pathway, see p. 304 in reference 343. Scored on minimal medium without sugar, using ammonium acetate (3 mg/ml) as the carbon source. The wild type shows sparse but clearly positive growth in contrast to clear blanks for acu mutants. Selectable by inositol-less death on acetate medium. acu-1, acu-5, acu-6, and acu-7 do not behave as respiratory mutants in tetrazolium overlay tests on acetate medium (310).
