(94) Cannot use nitrate or nitrite as a nitrogen source, but uses ammonia and amino acids (94). Regulator for induction by nitrate of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase (1080). Allele nr15, called nit-5 (1000), is phenotypically identical to other nit-4 alleles; shown to be allelic by failure to complement or recombine (0 prototrophs per 2,080 progeny) (1080). Original allele was discovered in a wild isolate of N. intermedia from Borneo and introgressed into N. crassa (94).
