Lacks xanthine dehydrogenase (xanthine oxidase) (872) (Fig. 24). nit-1, -7, -8, and -9 mutants are also deficient in xanthine dehydrogenase activity because of a defect in the molybdenum containing cofactor that is common to xanthine dehydrogenase and nitrate reductase (741, 1080, 1081).
